SDG: A Personal Statement of Faith
SDG stands for soli Deo Gloria, or "to God alone be the glory." J.S. Bach, one of my greatest musical heroes, wrote these words on the last pages of several of his scores. I have attached the same initials to most of my own compositions as a reminder to myself as to why I engage in the creative act of music-writing. I don't regard myself as having any talent or skill that has not been given to me (1 Corinthians 4:7 "For who regards you as superior? What do you have that you did not receive? And if you did receive it, why do you boast as if you had not received it?"), so no, I can't take credit if there is any credit to be handed out. After all, the music I write will be gone some day; it won't last forever, and eventually it will amount to a pile of dust. But, (and this is my great hope), the Word of the Lord endures forever (I Peter 1:25). This Word speaks of the eternal kingdom of Jesus Christ, and if I can have some small part in promoting that kingdom, then I am satisfied to compose music to His glory.
